The Speedo swimsuit is creating serious waves all over the world after eight more records were broken in the past month by athletes using the ‘magic’ swimsuit. When it was used for the first time in competitions from Australia and Missouri, 2 American records and 3 world records fell.
The Speedo representatives were summoned by the International Swimming Federation to explain how the suit manages to give such an advantage to the swimmers that wear it. They were first suspected of cheating, but none of them turned positive on the doping tests, so the suit was found responsible for their performances.
Speedo defend themselves saying that although the suit gives the athletes an advantage, that is the nature of sports. They gave examples from athletics, as the snickers runners wear or the composition of running tracks. They also state that everyone has access to the suit, so the best swimmer should still win the race.
After the Swimming Federation will hear the officials out, I wonder what their decision would be? If they decide the suit is fine, then all the swimmers will have to buy it to match their opponents. If they say that it’s not good for the racers, then what would be the consequences? Will all the awards won with the swimsuit be withdrawn? We are looking forward to updates on the subject.
