Silicon nanowire converts light into energy

18 October 2007 No Comment

Silicon nanowire Solar cells have been developed by scientists that state they can convert solar light into energy to power the future nanotechnology. There are a lot of ways those cells can be used, including body diagnostics, from the inside to biological terrorism.

The light will be converted into energy through silicon nanowires, that each strand can develop up to 200 picowatts. There isn’t much energy, but for their size it’s enough, as ultralow electronics will be powered.

The scientists stated that we will be able to use this technology in a decade from now, but the bio-terrorism will be a high threat, requiring many safety procedures.

Looking as a coaxial cable, the nanowire is 100,000 times smaller and is made of silicon, instead of metal. It’s three different types of conductivity are arranged as layered shells and the light generates electrons in the outer one, then are swept into the second and the inner core.

The advantages of this technology are the low cost, low power consumption and especially the size, being virtually invisible with the naked eye. Unfortunately, we will have to wait one decade to see nanodevices powered by this technology built.
