Sharp announced that its latest blue-violet semiconductor laser will begin mass production in April. The GH04P25A4G semiconductor laser has the same 3.3mm diameter as their previous one, but it achieves 250mW output pulse, so it can increase the recording speed of dual-layer Blu-ray Disc media to 6x, in laptops. For desktops they’ve announced the GH04P25A2G semiconductor laser. Each sample of this two semiconductors will be priced at 50,000 yen, which means almost $462.

An interesting development that will certainly please those backup fanatics and movie pirates. Blu Ray wins again!
