Secure Jewelry

Secure Jewelry

How would you feel if your jewelry would be safe? I am talking about eliminating the threat of getting them stolen. This previously un-thought fact is slowly becoming a reality. The diamond ring of the future will have small chips embedded in them. Scientists at the Hitachi Research lab have manufactured the smallest RFID tag ever. It reaches a size of 0.05 mm by 0.05 mm. This is actually smaller than a grain of sand.To take things even further, this small “chip” is so thin that it can even be added in a special layer of protection on passports, currency or even gift certificates. The jewelry industry is so far the only one that has shown interest in this type of RFID tag. They are strongly considering adding it to rings and necklaces in order to track their origins. This move alone will make it a lot more difficult for jewelry to be sold illegally. Each chip would hold a unique 38-digit number, more than enough to tag every single piece of jewelry to be created in the next 100 years.

Hitachi will show this chip in February and will make it available by 2009. Even Wal-Mart is interested in the project and might be the first store to use the new technology.
