Samsung U540 Review
The samsung U540 has a lot of features, like Bluetooth, a speakerphone and 3G and a great music quality, unfortunately it it has low quality camera and display and it’s performances aren’t the best. This mobile phone isn’t quite a mid or high end one, even if it has 3G, lacking lots of other features, like the display or camera, that definitely should have been much better.
It features stereo speakers, with a good sound quality and it’s sizes are 3.8×2x0.6″, being a little bulky for it’s specs. It weights 2.8 ounces, being almost all covered in plastic. The external display is 1″ big and has a resolution of 96×96 pixels, showing the signal strength, battery life, date and time and it supports 65k colors, displaying the photo called ID.
The camera is placed right above the display and below the display are the touch sensitive music controls, that can be locked using a button below the volume controller. The microSD memory card slot is under the battery slot, but the battery doesn’t have to be removed to get to it.
Samsung U540’s internal display is 2.2″ big, with a 176×220 pixels resolution and supports 262k colors, but has a low quality and it can’t be seen in direct light. It’s menu is better, in comparison with older Samsung phones, but not excellent.
It has a spacious navigation array and a four way toggle, with a ok button in the middle, that opens the menu. It also has a camera button, voice-dialling key, clear control, two soft keys, Talk and End/Power buttons. The keypad keys aren’t very easy to use, without looking at them, being too slick.

It’s phonebook can hold 500 contacts with five numbers and two email addresses each and each contact can be assigned to caller groups, a picture and ringtone. Also, it features voice commands and dialing, text and multimedia messages, vibrate mode, a calendar, stopwatch, calculator, alarm clock, world clock, instant messaging, email, speakerphone and notepad.
The 1,3 megapixel camera supports 5 resolutions, from 128×96 to 1,280×960 pixels, featuring night mode, white balance and brightness controls, three quality modes, adjustable ISO, multishot mode, seven color effects, digital zoom and self timer. It has 15MB of internal memory, which is not enough, requiring a memory card.
Being an EV-DO cell phone, it supports Verizon’s 3G services, as the V Cast video service and the V Cast music store and features a standard Verizon music player. The Samsung U540 can be easily personalized with plenty of screensavers, banners, themes and tones, having the option to buy from Verizon. U540’s call quality is decent and it hears loud, with no problems. The signal is strong and isn’t creating trouble when talking. It’s speakers have decent sound quality and they hear loud, even in noisy places.
The battery lifetime is up to 3.5 hours of talk time and 8.3 days in standby. The U540 is priced at $99 with service, but can be found even cheaper.
