iPhone Hacked

Jon Johansen, a prolific 23 year old Norwegian hacker of consumer electronics gadgets declared on his blog that he has found a way to overcome iPhone’s restrictions in order to bypass AT&T Inc’s network to let users use the mobile phone’s Music and Internet features. He declared in a post entitled “iPhone Independence Dayâ€:
“I’ve found a way to activate a brand new inactivated iPhone. The iPhone does not have phone capability, but the iPod and Wi-Fi work. Stay tuned!â€
His site contains a lot of technical details for other hackers and also presents links to the necessary software needed to complete the process. His methods can make it possible for an iPhone user outside of the US to access iPhone’s music player and Internet service without using the phone. Mark Siegel, spokesman for AT&T declared that it is not necessary to activate the iPhone on AT&T:
“Any other use of the device is not authorized and we can’t guarantee the device will perform as intended to. We’ll monitor situations like this and if necessary we will take appropriate action. Our terms and conditions are very clear.â€
There is no official statement concerning the possible actions AT&T might take and Apple declined to comment on Johansen’s claims.

As long as they are not using AT&T’s network for anything, phone or cellular internet, then I don’t think that there is anything that AT&T can do about it.
Using the Ipod functionality and the Wi-Fi internet is not using anything illegally, well unless you connect to a wi-fi illegally.
