I.B.M.’s System S

I.B.M. plans to demonstrate a new system called System S at a conference of modern technology makers of Wall Street. The news consists in a high-performance computer system that can rapidly analyze data coming from multiple sources and in turn increase accuracy and speed in decision making. Fields of use can be very divers from stock trading to security surveillance.Stream computing is becoming more important each month. It is an effort to deal with two issues: the growing number of digital information sources and a practical need to handle data faster in analyses used in science and business. Nowadays the method used to achieve this is storing data on a computer, searching its database for certain patterns and ask it questions. This operation is time consuming so I.B.M.’s new system might be successful.
With stream computing, advanced software algorithms are used to analyze data as it streams in. This means that an immediate trial of what is important and what not can be done and then priority data is highlighted. After this process the end result is put in a program that can deal with problematic situations and can predict the spread of patterns together with quickly correcting flows and providing solutions. I.B.M. considers the System S project over and very useful. It now runs on 800 microprocessors but can go up to thousands if needed. The biggest break through it offers is special software that enables applications to split up tasks and after that re-unite data as pieces of a puzzle in an answer.
If I.B.M. is successful it could mean a new era for the company and offering System S services as a pay-for-use service could mean a lot of money for I.B.M.
