Google’s Android Debuts At T-Mobile $179.00
Tuesday unveiled the first cellphone that runs Google Inc.’s Android software, a device packed with features that include an advanced Web browser and a number of Google services to spur wider use of the Internet on phones.
The device, which is called the G1 and carries the Google brand on the back, resembles other smartphones on the market — including Apple Inc.’s iPhone and handsets made by LG Electronics Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. But the companies are betting that the built-in software will help it stand out.
The G1 will be available in stores Oct. 22, priced at $179 with a two-year service contract. That’s $20 less than the iPhone, which is sold by AT&T Inc. in the U.S. Deutsche Telekom’s international T-Mobile operation will begin selling the phone across Europe early next year.
Completing its first version of its mobile operating system is a milestone for Google, which has experimented with ways to spread its services to mobile for years. At times, its efforts — such as bidding to purchase its own wireless spectrum — have appeared as a crusade to change the wireless industry but the phone demonstrates how the company is currently content to work with traditional partners.
