Intel To Release Better SSDs For Cheap
[12 Mar 2008 | No Comment | ]

Intel has released low consumption, small SSD chips in December, that were consuming 1.1mW while idle and 300mW while reading/writing, being sized at 12×18×1.8mm. Unfortunately their Z-P140 PATA SSD are’t very good on speed, with only 16GB capacity and speeds of 40MB/s reading and 30MB/s writing.
Now Intel is going to use the new MLC ( multi-level cell ) chips for the 1.8″ and 2.5″ SSDs and the drives will have capacities from 80Gb to 160GB, using the SATA II interface.
Good news are that SDD prices will probably drop with 35 …

Two New Memory Technologies From SanDisk
[8 Feb 2008 | No Comment | ]

SanDisk Corporation announced two new kinds of memory technology: a 16Gb x3 NAND flash which uses 56nm flash technology, and a 43nm technology. The first will go on production in March or April, and it will be the world’s first 3-bits-per-cell (x3) NAND flash memory. This one provides over 20% more die per wafer than a 2-bits-per-cell, and it has a higher manufacturing efficiency. A Brazilian design, called Marcos Breder, has designed a good-looking flash drive, domino-shaped. The flash drives represent halves of dominoes and can be inserted one in each other, but that’s not all. They have dots on them, that each represent a giga of space loaded on the drive. The drives are quite practical and also funny, but we don’t know anything yet of release date or pricing, unfortunately.
