BlackBerry Curve Outsells the iPhone 3G

Yes, it’s true. The RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 8300 models) is officially the best-selling smartphone for the first quarter of 2009. This is probably going to give the upcoming RIM BlackBerry Curve 8900 (coming this Summer) a little push up to the top, considering it’s similarities to the 8300.
Based on U.S. consumer sales of smartphone handsets in NPD’s “Smartphone Market Update” report, the first-quarter 2009 ranking of the top-five best-selling smartphones is as follows: Read more
Analyst Says the Palm Pre is Dying

You would think a phone like the Palm Pre would be selling like I don’t know what. That’s not what Collins Stewart Analyst, Ashok Kumar says. Earlier today, Kumar stated that the Palm Pre will be dead on arrival due to shortages, manufacturing problems, and “multiple hardware and software issues”. Here’s what he wrote:
Collins Stewart analyst Ashok Kumar claims that his supply chain checks indicate that Palm has “drastically reduced its production orders” for the Pre. Kumar says “multiple hardware and software issues” have forced Palm’s hand here and that he doesn’t expect the company to meet its expected goal of one million units shipped in the second half of 2009. He even goes so far as to describe that figure as “highly unrealistic.” Read more

Microsoft ‘Pink’ Cellphone Blends Zune & Sidekick DNA at CES 2009?

Microsoft execs may be denying that any self-branded cellphone is in development, but somebody connected with the company doesn’t seem to have got the same memo.
CNBC’s Jim Goldman quotes “a good source” claiming Microsoft are combining the Zune and technology from Danger (the company behind the Sidekick) to create a device offering “true competition to the iPhone”. Codenamed “Pink”, a prototype could be finished in time to unveil at CES 2009 in January. Read more
LG Introduces 3G Wrist Phone

Korea-based LG has introduced its latest mobile device, the LG-GD910 wrist-phone featuring support for both 3G and HSDPA technology. The user interface is presented through a 1.43-inch color LCD touchscreen, while a video camera has been integrated into the watch face for video recording or conferencing. The device also offers text-to-speech (TTS) capabilities, Bluetooth, MP3 playback and voice dialing with speech recognition. The company claims download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps when using HSDPA.
The LG-GD910 is scheduled for an official debut at CES in January. European and Korean customers will have the first opportunity to purchase the new wrist phones, although pricing has not yet been announced.
SlingPlayer Mobile Comes to the Blackberry

With MobiTV’s existing Blackberry client, TV on the go is nothing new for owners of RIM’s popular Smartphone–but for Slingbox users, those pesky $9.99 monthly fees can now be a thing of the past. Sling Media today launched a public beta of its SlingPlayer Mobile application for BlackBerry, bringing a slew of television content to BlackBerry Bold, 8820, 8320, 8220, and 8120 devices.
The 1.5MB application can run on a 3G or Wi-Fi connection, streaming video to your smartphone with no monthly fees. Currently in public beta, the client will cost $29.99 at its official launch, with a 30-day trial available at no charge. You can check out the application on the Web or head to mobile.slingmedia.com from your BlackBerry to download the latest version.
I tried SlingPlayer Mobile on a BlackBerry Bold and had some difficulty connecting to my SlingBox, though the application recognized my username and password. The application worked without a problem, though, after I restarted the BlackBerry.

BlackBerry Storm

RIM’s BlackBerry Storm will try to better the interface of the iPhone as well as emulate it, a pair of leaks show. A BGR scoop shows that the cellphone maker’s first touch device will still include a copy-and-paste function despite the absence of typical controls; a multi-touch input lets users tap the ends of text to highlight the relevant sections; users can then refine where the text starts and copy it to paste it later.
The solution depends in part on the Storm’s use of a dedicated hardware menu button, which lets owners issue a copy command without having to perform additional gestures. The iPhone depends entirely on its touchscreen and to date doesn’t have a solution.
Additionally, the new BlackBerry will also reportedly serve as the debut of the BlackBerry Application Center, CrackBerry reveals. A rough equivalent to Apple’s iPhone App Store or Google’s Android Market, the service will act as a portal for third-party apps but will have its choices dictated by carriers rather than by the phone maker; they will host the content but use a central RIM server as a filter. The move will let carriers limit access to software they think would consume too much bandwidth or otherwise run against their policies, though it wouldn’t constitute an outright ban.
Google’s Android Debuts At T-Mobile $179.00
Tuesday unveiled the first cellphone that runs Google Inc.’s Android software, a device packed with features that include an advanced Web browser and a number of Google services to spur wider use of the Internet on phones.
The device, which is called the G1 and carries the Google brand on the back, resembles other smartphones on the market — including Apple Inc.’s iPhone and handsets made by LG Electronics Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. But the companies are betting that the built-in software will help it stand out.
The G1 will be available in stores Oct. 22, priced at $179 with a two-year service contract. That’s $20 less than the iPhone, which is sold by AT&T Inc. in the U.S. Deutsche Telekom’s international T-Mobile operation will begin selling the phone across Europe early next year.
Completing its first version of its mobile operating system is a milestone for Google, which has experimented with ways to spread its services to mobile for years. At times, its efforts — such as bidding to purchase its own wireless spectrum — have appeared as a crusade to change the wireless industry but the phone demonstrates how the company is currently content to work with traditional partners.
BlackBerry Pearl Flip to include Wi-Fi
Research in Motion Ltd., the maker of BlackBerry phones, is set to reveal today a phone that folds in half, a departure from the slab-like design that has defined its products.
The long-rumored phone will be called the BlackBerry Pearl Flip and will be available from T-Mobile USA and with overseas carriers later this year, at an undisclosed price.
The “flip” or “clamshell” design, where the display and keyboard are separated by a hinge, is a popular one for conventional cell phones, particularly in the United States. Jim Balsillie, co-chief executive of RIM, said 70 percent of handsets in the country have this shape.
“Bringing this form factor to the smart-phone category is, we think, very special,” Balsillie said. “Smart” phones expand the features of a regular phone with applications such as Web browsing and e-mail access, which is RIM’s forte.
