NVIDIA announced their latest laptop GPUs: the GeForce 8800 GTS and GeForce 8800 GTX, which are the base of Alienware systems. Those are the fastest GPUs for notebooks, as it is said. The 8800M GTX has 96 processors, while the GTS has only 64. Although this is a big difference between them, they are almost identical. This GPUs have the full support of DirectX 10, an HD decoding engine, Pure Video, a memory of 512MB and the PowerMizer technology, which creates a balance between the life of the battery and …

After AMD has announced the new quad core Phenom processors, Intel is introducing the new 3.2Ghz QX9770 Core 2 Extreme processor. It seems it will be the fastest processor on the market, featuring the 45nm Yorkfield class silicon, a 12MB L2 cache and a 1,600Mhz FSB. Until now, Intel’s fastest processor was the Core 2 Extreme QX9650, but the QX9770 is 5 to 8% faster than it, so there should be some improvements in speed. The processor should be available in Q1 2008 for a price of about $1,200.

Most of the current devices are Flash and RAM-based, like cellphones, computers, pocket PCs, PMPs and many more. Wouldn’t it be great if you could store data ten times faster than on a Flash memory and also it would last for more than 10 years ? Well, Dr. Shin Young-han states that he figured out how to deal with ferroelectrics and we might use FeRAM in the future that will have the capabilities i was talking about. But currently nothing is for sure, so we can only wait and see …

What would you say if I told you that thanks to the US Air Force Research Laboratory we could have laptop batteries that would last for 30 years without the need of a recharge? You would say I am crazy but this is exactly what we need to talk about now. They invented a special betavolic power cell that is built from semiconductors with the use of radioisotopes as energy sources. Radioactive material ends up decaying over time and as a result it emits beta particles. They transform into electric …

Some time in the past nVidia released SLI Memory and Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP). They were based on the fact that by coupling the right memory on the right chipset and motherboard you could overclock the RAM you have without knowing how to do this. Now we have something similar launched by Intel with the release of the X38 chipset. It will be called Intel Extreme Memory Profile (XMP). Justl like EMP, XMP will include extra info on memory modules thanks to regular SPD data. Now the user will not …

Toshiba recently launched a prototype hard disk that uses special Discrete Track Recording (DTR) technology in order to create a 120 GB storage space system on one 1.8 inch platter. This is the first ever use of DTR. The entire technology is based on increasing areal density of PMR by 50%. Mass production of these hard disks should start in 2009.
Up until now all 1.8 inch hard disks were only able to get up to 160 GB. This was available through two 80 GB platters. With the above mentioned prototype …

The Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD war is still going on and each side is continuously trying to attack the other. With this in mind we find ourselves in a race for exclusive deals that might determine the winner. Sony USA made an interesting announcement. Three new DVD burners are to be released on the market. What is interesting is that 2 of them are external. This comes as a paradox as there is a much bigger need of such devices in Japan because of the fact that most laptops come with a flash-based hard drive disk that leaves no place for a DVD or CD drive. In USA, flash-based hard drives are a rarity and just few companies provide machines with this option. The market is just to …
