Canon IXUS 950 IS Review
The Canon Digital IXUS 950 IS appears as a very good 8 megapixel digital camera featuring a more than enough 2.5 inch LCD screen and an optical viewfinder, a feature that is becoming rare among compact cameras. This device has implemented image stabilizer technology that can help in camera shaking situations and the optical zoom is effective at its 4X capability, with an effective focal length of 35 to 140 mm. The Canon Digital IXUS 950 IS is based on the same advanced DIGIC III processor as the SLR cameras. This allows quicker image processing and better performance. With this model we can find 14 scene models that are perfect for beginners and an advanced Manual mode for those of you that want complete control. VGA movies are processed at 30 fps, in-camera color effects are available and PictBridge plus USB 2.0 supports make it all complete.
All the Canon IXUS models have had beautiful designs and the IXUS 950 IS is no exception. There are no important modifications to the predecessor when it comes to the back plate except for more rounded buttons, direct print, menu and display options. A viewable difference stands in the included 32 MB SD card that comes a little bigger than last year’s 16 MB, although it is still not comparable with the possibility of adding a 1GB card bought at one of the many shops selling them. One of the biggest improvements since the last model is the resolution as the IXUS 950 IS highlights a more than enough 8 megapixel but still slow if we take a look at the 12 megapixel competition. What it lacks in resolution it gains back in the 4X zoom that has built in optical image stabilization (that’s why the “IS” suffix appears). COmbine this with face detection technology that sharpens focus when it detects a face in the photo, all powered by the DIGIC III image processor and we have a great combination.
On the whole, the Canon IXUS 950 IS is a very good camera that can be used by both beginners and professional photographers. It provides images of around 3.5 MB at the highest quality settings and the built in features it offers aid you in taking better photos. The design is very good, the camera is just as high as a credit card and looking good is becoming a very important aspect with digital cameras. Price is the only problem as it does seem a little high. Besides that all is very good with the Canon IXUS 950 IS.
