Blockbuster, one of the most renowned film rental companies is set to use only high-definition DVDs in the Blu-ray format in all of its 1,450 stores in the US. This translates in a blow for Toshiba’s HD DVD format and thumbs up for Sony’s Blu-ray format. Blockbuster declared that it was the consumers that made the choice. It seems that the Blu-Ray format was a lot more popular in the 250 stores were both could be rented. Combine this with the fact that most studios offer movies in Blu-ray format as compared with HD DVD that is only used as unique format by Universal Studios. Blockbuster announced that the HD DVD will still be available over the Internet and in 250 of its stores. Critics consider the move bad as such a decision in the short time period of the format’s existence is something that should not have been done. Blockbuster was pushed by the success of movies released only in Blu-ray format like Spider Man 3 and Casino Royale. So far consumers are happy with the decision and this is what counts.
