Blizzard Sued by Founder Electronics Co.
Chinese IT firm Founder Electronics Co. is currently suing the developer of one of the most successful games ever, World of Warcraft. The reason stands in using some of its fonts without any permission. The company claims it lost around 132 million dollars (around one billion yuan) because of the unauthorized use of five fonts.
Founder thus filed an “interim claim” at a court in Beijing seeking for 100 million yuan in damages against Blizzard Entertainment, a Shangai based IT firm called The9 (they run the game in China) and Qinqwentuwen (they distribute the game in Beijing).
Chinese law states that damages can be calculated by the defender’s illegal gains based on copyright infringement or by analyzing the plaintiff’s losses. World of Warcraft currently has 7.5 million paying users so this infringement is quite serious. Founder claims it is the world’s largest provider of Chinese fonts and also features many other multi-language fonts. This suit is believed to be among ones with the largest damages requested for intellectual property in China.
