Apple, AT&T and Steve Jobs Sued for $1 Million

6 October 2007 No Comment

iPhone price cut

Apple did not gain popularity when they cut the price of their 8GB iPhone by $200, all just 2 months after the popular mobile phone debuted. The company responded to angry buyers by offering a $100 iPhone credit for those that paid more money for the device. This was still not enough for several early adopters and one of them actually sued Steve Jobs, AT&T and Apple for “just” $1 million. I am talking about New Yorker Dongmei Li, which eventually purchased a 4GB iPhone version as the 8GB model was already sold out when she got in front of the line on launch day.The entire lawsuit is quite interesting and I am talking about the claims issued. Dongmei Li claims that Apple allowed for the 8GB iPhone to sell out on launch day and misled the buyers by telling that only 4GB models were still available while not telling them the fact that new 8GB models will still be manufactured. The price cut, according to Li, was planned and the company took advantage of young, early adopters, knowing all along that there will be a $200 price cut in the future. Such a move also made it impossible for early users to sell their iPhones for profit and this was intentionally done to cut competition in resellers. Discrimination was also put on paper in the lawsuit as there was a difference in the money offered by Apple, based on when you purchased the more expensive iPhone.

There are a lot more claims in the lawsuit but one was really interesting. It seems that Dongmei Li thinks that the iPhone is selling now for too low of a price. Interesting, as she stated the launch price tag was a more reasonable one. Both iSuppli and Porelligent reported that the 8GB iPhone costs around $220 to $280 to make so this claim is off the hook. The list of far off complains continues both against Steve Jobs and AT&T and it is highly likely that they will not stand in court. This still shows us that in USA you can sue practically anybody, including God (as a senator recently did just that), but this does not mean it will be successful.
