2012 Might Bring us Scramjet Powered Planes and Missiles

15 December 2007 2 Comments

Scramjet plane

All the world is on a competition to build a working and dependable scramjet, that should fly from New York to Tokyo in just two hours, because of the high speeds it could reach. Especially Australia, China and the United States are doing a hard job for it and finally it seems DARPA is working on a concept that might be released in 2012, the Blackswift, also known as HTV-3X.

Another reason why they want the scramjet so badly is because a missile using it would hit any target on Earth in just a few minutes. Also, the planes will hit speeds of up to Mach 6, almost double than the current fastest jet, that only reaches Mach 3.3, the SR-71 Blackbird. Fortunately, the scramjets aren’t limited to the Mach 6 speed that the Blackswift will reach, have been tested at speeds of up to Mach 15, so in the future it’s possible to reach much more.
