Sony Cybershot DSC-G1 WiFi Announced

Sony has announced today a new Cybershot digital camera. The DSC-G1 is a point and shoot with a 6 megapixels sensor, but it uses a new technology for Sony, the camera to camera wireless ( WiFi ). Also, it can search throught the photos for those who containt the same face, composition or color with the one you choose ( that’s what we should call image search ).

The Sony Cybershot DSC-G1 has a 3.5″ LCD display with a 921,000 pixels resolution and a whopping internal memory of 2GB, where you can store up to 600 photos of maximum resolution ( 6 megapixels ). The features aren’t ending here, the camera also having a 1000 ISO, 3x optical zoom and 6x digital zoom, Carl Zeiss lens, it can record videos with sound and encode them to MPEG4, Super HAD CCD, Digital Living Network Alliance ( DLNA ), album and slideshow with sound, collaboration shot, picture gift and a great Stamina InfoLithium battery, with increased lifetime.

The camera is priced at $600 and will be on sale starting April.

“Camera to camera wireless” — talk about useless. Camera to PC wireless I could understand, but this is less useful than Zune squirting (does anybody remember Zune?). If I find another DSC-G1, I can squirt them my photos, right? “Welcome to the social.”

So we have a 6 MP point-and-shoot (in my language, such camera is called “idiot”), for $600 — rather close Nikon D-50 DSLR which is a real camera.

One can pick up a 6MP P&S for $150 these days, or a Fuji F31FD for a really capable one (with ISO3200, the feature everyone actually needs).

Wifi is Wifi. Unless they are abusing the term. Should be Camera to Camera, Camera to PC, Camera to NAS, etc. And hey Cy, lighten up! Just because something has fewer features and is more for casual use as opposed to hobby or professional use does not imply that it is for idiots. To paraphrase Freud, “Sometimes a camera is just a camera.”

  4. I suppose that the internal memory is nice for new camera owners.

    Who’s going to pay $600 for a camera with such a tiny/slow lens? I don’t care if it’s a Carl Zeiss…

  6. What’s the point of having camera to camera wifi?
    It’s way too expensive.
